Foreign materials are often seen by light microscopy in surgical or au
topsy specimens sent from the cardiovascular clinical services. This p
aper describes the range of materials that may be recovered in such sp
ecimens and provides a pictorial guide to aid in their identification.
The spectrum of medical and nonmedical foreign materials that may be
encountered in the cardiovascular system is discussed.
