Abstract
The factors promoting the development of vertic characteristics in Bul garian Smolnitsas and Compact Chernozems of Krasnodar Kray include not only the predominance of smectites in the fine fractions of loam-text ured soils, but also extreme fineness and low crystallinity of clay pa rticles and a low concentration of nonsilicate iron.
