The results of a theoretical analysis of the first passage time statis
tics in single mode diode lasers are reported. A fast triangular curre
nt pulse is used to drive a semiconductor laser in order to approximat
e working conditions close to those obtained when the transmission rat
e is limited by the parasitics of the driving circuit. The results sho
w a very good agreement with numerical simulations of the nonlinear ev
olution of the dynamical system demonstrating the accuracy of the appr
oximations involved in our theory.
