We have succeeded in the formation of a quasi-one-dimensional electron
gas on an edge surface of an A]GaAs/GaAs multiple quantum well (MQW)
structure with well width of 100 nm. The sample was prepared by the ex
posure of a cleaved surface of an MQW substrate and subsequent overgro
wth of a doped AlGaAs layer on the edge. The existence of electrons on
the edge surface and their one dimensionality are, respectively, evid
enced by the angular dependence of magnetoresistance and the magnetic
depopulation effect.
