Educators who want to institute moral education, but are confused abou
t the program to use, could well look into the old method of using sto
ries. New studies find that stories. working on the unconscious, can f
acilitate the child's organization of his world, provide numerous vari
eties of experiences, and increase enpathetic understanding. Moreover,
guided discussion groups following the story foster the democratic pr
ocess while becoming the mechanism for growth in moral reasoning. Teac
her education programs need to develop the skills needed for using sto
ries successfully for moral development of pupils.
