The purpose of this paper is to discuss how the Curriculum and Evaluat
ion Standards for School Mathematics (1989) and the Professional Stand
ards for Teaching Mathematics (1991), companion documents published by
the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, can be used in prepa
ring mathematics teachers. The first document includes broad goals and
guidelines for mathematics content in Kindergarten through Grade 12 c
lassrooms; and the second document focuses on the preparation of mathe
matics professionals. Integration of ideas reflected in both documents
into mathematics methods classrooms through reflection on tasks, disc
ourse, environment, and analysis is imperative for future teachers of
mathematics.
