Seismic reflection profiles across the Hatton Bank continental margin
in the eastern North Atlantic have imaged thick sequences of seaward-d
ipping reflectors. Converted shear waves propagating through one of th
ese sequences were recorded on a two-ship expanding spread profile jus
t landward of the ocean-continent transition. Synthetic seismogram mod
elling of these shear waves indicates that Poisson's ratio in the sequ
ence is 0.27 +/- 0.01, similar to that of normal oceanic Layer 2.
