Abstract
Glass formation from melts of 44CaO.56Ga2O3 (mol %) was investigated u nder containerless conditions obtained by acoustically stabilized aero dynamic levitation in combination with laser beam heating. The critica l cooling rate for glass formation was R(c) < 100-degrees-C/s, much le ss than values reported in the literature (R(c) = 550-degrees +/- 120- degrees-C/s and ca. 350-degrees-C/s) for pendant drops of this composi tion attached to Pt-Rh thermocouples. High values of R(c) in pendant d rop experiments were confirmed for the specimens used in this work.
