Abstract
Hormones play a central role in regulating plant growth and developmen t. There are five well-characterized plant hormones, the chemically si mplest of which is the gaseous olefin ethylene. Molecular genetic stud ies of Arabidopsis are beginning to reveal the mechanisms controlling ethylene biosynthesis, perception and signal transduction.
