The presence of the scent glands were examined macroscopically and his
tologically in the Japanese vole, Microtus montebelli and the Hungaria
n vole, Microtus arvalis. A pair of scent glands were observed on the
buttocks of the Japanese vole as the oval nodules with yellowish color
ed skin. The size of the glands was larger in males than in females. H
istologically, the glands were composed of the aggregation of many aci
ni of sebaceous glands. The epidermis above the scent glands were thic
ker than that in the other areas. In the Hungarian vole, no such gland
could be detected with macroscopical and histological examinations.
