A methodology for information system planning and selection among alte
rnative solutions for computerization of an organization is presented.
The methodology is composed of the following stages: 1. Definition of
the organizational processes and objectives. 2. Definition of the com
puter-related goals set for each organizational objective. 3. Definiti
on of the alternative information system processes required for each o
f the computer-related goals. 4. Identification of alternative systems
to satisfy those information system processes and selection of the pr
eferred system. 5. Preparation of a request for proposal. 6. Selection
of the preferred alternative. The article describes in detail the fir
st five steps of the methodology, along with an illustrative example.
