Allantomyces caenidarum sp.nov., a trichomycete fungus that lives in t
he hindgut of Tasmanocoenis sp. (Caenidae) mayfly nymphs in southweste
rn Western Australian streams, is described. In addition to normal tri
chospores and zygospores that serve to reinfest other nymphs, A. caeni
darum also produces what may be modified trichospores that serve to in
crease gut infestation endogenously. The same species of mayfly also h
arbored a new species, Legeriomyces rarus, which belongs to a genus pr
eviously known only from North America and Europe.
