Abstract
Two patients with infectious complications 3 and 5 days after elective sclerotherapy of esophageal varices are presented. Both patients had liver cirrhosis (primary biliary cirrhosis and alcoholic liver cirrhos is with hepatitis B virus infection respectively). In one patient a br ain abscess developed which was treated successfully by antibiotics an d surgery; in the other patient pneumococcal bacteriemia and gonarthri tis developed. Frequency, possible causes and antibiotic prophylaxis a re discussed.
