M. Sebek, SPECIFIC PARAMETERS OF PSYCHOANALYTIC TRE ATMENTS IN UNFAVORABLE AND DANGEROUS SOCIAL CONDITIONS IN THE FORMER CZECH CULTURE, Forum der Psychoanalyse, 9(3), 1993, pp. 256-267
Psychoanalysis in former Czechoslovakia was practiced since the thirti
es without interruption until the present time. It has survived 40 yea
rs under the communist regime in underground conditions. The author de
scribes the specific and historical features of the Czech underground
which has tradition in Czech culture. Specific parameters of the psych
oanalytic treatments under unfavourable and dangerous social condition
s are demonstrated. Issues of transference and counter-transference pr
oblems are discussed. The psychoanalytic theory of reality, its levels
and ''compartments'' helps to understand how the safe space in the ps
ychoanalytic process could be created and maintained. The special ethi
cal role of psychoanalysts in the totalitarian society is underlined.
Clinical vignettes are used to illustrate problems of the underground
psychoanalytic practice.
