The hydrogen evolution reaction was studied in 1M NaOH solution at 70-
degrees-C on various PTFE-bonded electrode materials. Using steady-sta
te galvanostatic measurements and ac. impedance spectroscopy, the elec
trode properties and kinetic parameters were determined. It was found
that the a.c. behavior could be described by a constant phase element
model and that the hydrogen evolution reaction proceeds via the Volmer
-Heyrovsky mechanism. No catalytic effect of PTFE was found. The obser
ved changes in performance could be explained by changes in the roughn
ess of the electrode materials.
