This paper reports the design of a balance sensor which can detect til
t and direction angles. An electromagnetic proximity sensor is employe
d for the detection of the tilt angle. The maximum tilt angle is 18.9-
degrees. On the other hand, the direction angle is measured by a linea
r resistive circuit and the range of this angle is 360-degrees, with a
resolution of 0.0915-degrees. Tilt-angle detection is based on the el
ectromagnetic interaction between a metal ball and a flat thin-film co
il, which forms part of an oscillatory circuit. The results of differe
nt coil-geometry parameters are presented. It is found that the coil g
eometry and the uniformity of the thin-film resistor for detecting til
t and direction angles, respectively, are very important parameters co
ntributing to the performance of the sensor.
