The spatial-temporal structure of magnetic fields in a laser plasma ha
s been studied by a Faraday-effect method for the first time, at incid
ent beam intensities approximately 5 X 10(14) W/cm2. Analysis of the e
xperimental data shows that the magnetic fields are generated as a res
ult of the excitation of a thermal emf and a ponderomotive emf. The sp
atial structure of the magnetic field indicates that this field has an
important effect on the hydrodynamics of the plasma corona.
