A localized quasiparticle state is predicted in a superconducting cont
act with a paramagnetic tunnel barrier in the absence of Josephson cur
rents and magnetic fields. The energy of the state would be in the gap
and would be degenerate in the orientation of the quasiparticle spin.
The results of this study can be used to interpret tunneling experime
nts on Pb/Ho(OH)3/Pb and Pb/Er(OH)3/Pb systems.
