Abstract
An electronic device and method for determining the size and degree of packing of the rumen mat in ruminants are described. The mat meter ou tputs to a chart recorder the distance travelled and the time elapsed for a small weight to ascend through the rumen contents under the cons tant force of an external weight, From the chart recordings, the rate of ascent (min 100 cm-1) of the weight can be calculated as an index o f the degree of packing of the rumen mat in selected strata of the rum en contents.
