Ga. Bracher et Pa. Murtha, RELATIONSHIP OF THE RATIO OF CHLOROPHYLL-A TO CHLOROPHYLL-B AND DOUGLAS-FIR SEEDLING NUTRIENT STATUS, Canadian journal of forest research, 23(8), 1993, pp. 1655-1662
One-year-old Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seedli
ngs were treated with 24 nutrient solutions containing nitrogen, phosp
horus, and sulphur levels ranging from 1 to 400 mg/L. After one growin
g season, newly matured needles were harvested, and foliar samples ana
lyzed for nutrient and chlorophyll concentrations. Several nutrient de
ficiencies were diagnosed. A consistent and statistically significant
relationship between the ratio of chlorophyll a to b and the severity
of nutrient deficiency was not found; consequently, it appears ineffec
tual as an index of nutrient stress.
