The synthesis and characterization of two complete series of benzyl(ph
enylsilyl)amines (PhH2Si)x(PhH2C)3 - N, benzyl(p-tolylsilyl)amines (p-
H3CC6H4H2Si)x(PhH2C)3-xN, and of bis-(p-tolylsilyl)amine are described
. The compounds have been prepared from the corresponding amines and c
hlorosilanes with triethylamine as the auxiliary base. Bis(phenylsi-ly
l)(trimethylsilyl)amine, (PhH2Si)2NSiMe3 (10), was obtained by the rea
ction of lithium bis(phenylsilyl)amide with chlorotrimethylsilane. Cry
stal structure analyses reveal that dibenzyl(p-tolylsilyl)amine (7) an
d 10 contain planar nitrogen atoms. Heteronuclear NMR spectra (H-1, C-
13, N-15, and Si-29) have been measured for all compounds. The N-15 ch
emical shifts are shown to be sensitive to variations of the geometry
at the nitrogen atom. The coupling constants (1J(NSi))-N-15-Si-29 show
a linear correlation with the N-Si bond lengths.
