Wa. Hochwarter et al., THE IMPACT OF PERSISTENCE ON THE STRESSOR-STRAIN AND STRAIN-INTENTIONS TO LEAVE RELATIONSHIPS - A FIELD EXAMINATION, Journal of social behavior and personality, 8(3), 1993, pp. 389-404
This study examined the moderating effects of persistence on the job s
tressor-strain relationship as well as its moderating effect on the st
rain-intention to turnover relationship. In this study, quantitative j
ob demands served as the job stressor while job burnout, job dissatisf
action, and job-induced tension acted as strain variables. Persistence
was viewed as a stable, individual difference variable and is defined
as the steadfast pursuit of an objective despite opposition (Feathers
, 1962; MacArthur, 1955). Results from this study indicated that persi
stence moderated the relationship between job tension and turnover. Un
der conditions of high tension, intentions to leave increased as emplo
yees' level of persistence decreased Implications for viewing persiste
nce as an important variable in future job stress research are discuss
