A comparison of the behaviour of commercial electrochemical manganese
dioxide (gamma-MnO2) and non-stoichiometric anodic Mn(x)O(y)(OH)z was
made. Anodic oxide proves to be composed mainly by MnO2 (ramsdellite)
and MnOOH (manganite), and contains more water and OH- than gamma-MnO2
. Hydroxide ions were shown to determine the ionic conductivity of Mn(
x)O(y)(OH)z which, in turn, strongly affects the rate of electroreduct
ion.
