In a young woman with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, poor diabet
ic control during the second trimester of pregnancy resulted in ketoac
idosis, accelerated fetal growth and polyhydramnios. With the establis
hment of tight maternal glycaemic control, both accelerated intrauteri
ne growth and polyhydramnios were reversed and a good pregnancy outcom
e resulted.
