Abstract
The first stage of the carbonization of acrylonitrile copolymers conta ining carboxyl groups has been investigated using IR spectroscopy. The absorption band at 2940 cm-1 can be used as a reference for the evalu ation of thermo-oxidative processes at a temperature of 180 +/- 2-degr ees-C. The hydrophilicity of the polymer determines the rate of the fo rmation of polyconjugated structures in the copolymers containing itac onic acid. Methyl methacrylate does not enter into thermooxidative sta bilization during the initial stage of heat treatment.
