An extension of Lipset's 1960 or 1981 hypothesis regarding socioeconom
ic status and social attitudes was investigated. Specifically, the rel
ation between family income and gender-role egalitarianism of 608 coll
ege students was examined by sex and age. For 149 younger men (less-th
an-or-equal-to 21 years) a significant correlation (-.17) was noted, b
ut the relation (-.01) did not hold for the 79 older men (over 21 year
s) or for women (-.02 and .04) of either age group.
