Jc. Cokendolpher et al., SEASONAL POPULATION PHENOLOGY AND HABITAT PREFERENCES OF MONTANE HARVESTMEN (ARACHNIDA, OPILIONES) FROM SOUTHWESTERN NEW-MEXICO, The Southwestern naturalist, 38(3), 1993, pp. 236-240
We studied seasonal changes in populations of harvestmen from three ar
id to semi-arid habitats in southwestern New Mexico. The following tax
a were collected: Sclerobunus robustus robustus (Packard), Leiobunum t
ownsendi Weed, Trachyrhinus marmoratus Banks, Protolophus singular's B
anks, and an undescribed species of Metopilio and another of Globipes.
Harvestmen were most abundant at the lowest (1,830 m) and highest (2,
440 m) elevations. Half of the species were present as juveniles in th
e spring, and as adults in the summer and fall. This suggests that the
y are univoltine and survive the winter as eggs or early instar juveni
les. Three genera, Globipes, Metopilio, and Protolophus, are newly rec
orded from New Mexico. Metopilio is a new record for the United States
.
