The amplitude acoustic reflection coefficient of an interface between
two lossy biological tissues can be approximated as R(lossy) approxima
te to R(lossless) + i Delta/2 where R(lossless) is the lossless acoust
ic reflection coefficient and Delta is the change in alpha/k (absorpti
on coefficient per wavenumber) across the tissue interface. This appro
ximation is shown to be valid for both normal and oblique angles of in
cidence.
