Abstract
The stridulatory apparatus in 8 species of Piesma Le Peletier & Serville wa
s examined. The apparatus is a modification of the hind wing's cubitus, and
it differs among species of Piesma with respect to the number, shape and s
ize of the stridulatory ridges. Differences in the properties of the stridu
latory ridges between subgenera generally support the current placement of
P, maculatum (Laporte de Castelnau) and P. capitatum (Wolff) in die subgenu
s Piesma s. str., and the placement of the other Palaearctic species of the
genus in Parapiesma Pericart.
