A revision of the genus Dicoma (Asteraceae: Cichorioideae: Mutisieae) in th
e Horn of Africa (Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia) is provided. Th
is area is probably a major center of radiation for this genus, and nine of
the twelve species present are endemic here. The revision is based on both
held observations and micro- and macromorphological study of herbarium spe
cimens. Six of the twelve species recognized have been described recently b
y the first two authors. For each species, data are presented on morphologi
cal characteristics, area of distribution (of particular interest in view o
f the incorrect information previously published for several of the species
), ecology, and local names. One new species, D. thuliniana, is described a
nd illustrated, one new combination, D. schimperi subsp, cinerea, is propos
ed, and D. lanuginosa is lectotypified.
