Abstract
This paper examines the effect of tenure on the earnings of males in the UK public and private sectors. The earnings-tenure effect is important in tha t it provides helpful information for individuals who are about to enter th e labour market. Given the distinct labour markets associated with the publ ic and private sectors, a disaggregation of this type also provides informa tion on the different earnings structures in the two sectors. The results s how that in general, the relationship between tenure and earnings is more p ronounced in the public than in the private sector.
