Abstract
Approximately 30% of rice hulls, which represent an abundant residue with l ittle commercial value, was solubilized with 0.4 M H2SO4 acid to produce a syrup containing over 100 g monomer sugar/l. Toxins generated during hydrol ysis were mitigated with Ca(OH)(2). Treated hydrolysate plus additional nut rients was fermented with Escherichia coli KO11 to produce over 46 g ethano l/L in 72 h (92% of theoretical yield).
