Lr. David et al., Temporalis fascialis sling - a surgical technique for the treatment of recurrent dislocation of the temporomandibular joint, EUR J PLAST, 21(8), 1998, pp. 411-414
Recurrent dislocation of the temporomandibular joint is a relatively common
problem for which many treatment alternatives have been described. When re
current dislocation fails to respond to conservative treatment or pain beco
mes a major problem, surgical intervention is warranted. Unfortunately, cur
rent treatments are unpredictable and are associated with problems such as
foreign body reactions, degeneration, and recurrent pain. We describe a new
procedure, using a temporalis sling for the treatment of recurrent temporo
mandibular joint dislocation. The temporalis sling has been effective in pr
eventing recurrent dislocation and has not disturbed the intricate articula
tion process involved in mouth opening. This alternative offers significant
amelioration of abnormal joint function and pain.
