Core-polarisation and meson-exchange current calculations have been perform
ed at Sr-88 and Zr-90 closed-shell cores to determine the effective magneti
c dipole operator for valence orbitals. The values obtained show considerab
le core- and orbit-dependency. The results are tested in shell-model calcul
ations for magnetic moments in N=50 and N=51 nuclides and the comparison wi
th experiment is satisfactory.
