Cortical sequestration involved the metacarpus or the metatarsus in four yo
ung horses. Three of the horses were treated successfully without surgical
excision; the fourth horse had a Large fragment of necrotic bone which nece
ssitated surgical removal. Although surgical excision may be the only optio
n for the treatment of large cortical sequestra, the three cases reported h
ere indicated that conservative measures, including appropriate antibiotic
treatment, can be used successfully to treat smaller sequestra.
