Three cone snail species (Conus ebraeus, C. leopardus, C. tessulatus, famil
y Conidae) have been investigated for their sterolic fraction. Besides chol
esterol, 5 alpha,8 alpha-epidioxycholest-6-en-3-beta-ol has been isolated f
rom each species and the structure determined using two-dimensional nuclear
magnetic resonance. The occurrence of 5 alpha,8 alpha-epidioxycholest-6-en
-3-beta-ol in high amounts in the crude extract (0.5%), constitutes an inte
resting source of this compound.
