Lj. Chen et al., Oncocytic adenomatous hyperplasia of the lacrimal sac: A case report and review of the literature, OPHTHAL PL, 14(6), 1998, pp. 436-440
Oncocytic tumors of the lacrimal sac are very rare, with only 21 cases docu
mented in the world literature. The authors report a 75-year-old woman who
sought treatment for recurrent dacryocystitis and a palpable mass in the le
ft medial canthal area. The patient underwent surgery for removal of a susp
ected lacrimal sac cancer, but pathologic findings indicated benign oncocyt
ic adenomatous hyperplasia. Complete removal of the tumor and long-term fol
low-up are necessary in patients with lacrimal sac oncocytic lesions. The a
uthors discuss the characteristic features of ocular adnexal oncocytic lesi
ons and review the literature.
