Specific heat, elastic neutron scattering, and torque measurements have bee
n performed on the two quasi-one-dimensional cuprates Ca0.83CuO2 and Sr0.73
CuO2. These compounds consist of infinite CuO2 chains, which are highly hol
e doped. In both compounds a peak in the specific heat, attributed to a sta
tic magnetic transition, has been observed at T similar to 10 K. Magnetic B
ragg peaks were identified in the neutron diffraction patterns, giving evid
ence of a three-dimensional long-range ordered ground state. [S0163-1829(98
