We examine the pion realization of the short-ranged supersymmetric (SUSY) m
echanism of neutrinoless double beta decay (O nu beta beta decay). It origi
nates from the R-parity violating quark-lepton interactions of the SUSY ext
ensions of the standard model of the electroweak interactions. We argue tha
t pions are dominant SUSY mediators in O nu beta beta decay. The correspond
ing nuclear matrix elements for potentially O nu beta beta-decaying isotope
s are calculated within the proton-neutron renormalized quasiparticle rando
m-phase approximation (pn-RQRPA). We define those isotopes which are most s
ensitive to the SUSY signal and provide an outlook on the present experimen
tal situation with the O nu beta beta-decay searches for SUSY. Upper limits
on the R-parity violating first-generation Yukawa coupling lambda'(111) ar
e derived from various O nu beta beta experiments. [S0556-2821(98)07821-7].
