A high-performance thin layer chromatographic (HPTLC) procedure for the cha
racterization of adulteration of "espinheira santa" (Maytenus ilicifolia an
d Maytenus aquifolium, Celastraceae) with Sorocea bomplandii (Moraceae), by
monitoring their flavonoid content with the aid of diphenylboric acid-2-am
inoethylester-polyethylene glycol 400 reagent, is presented. HPTLC data sho
wed the predominance of highly glycosylated quercetin and kaempferol deriva
tives. The derivatized flavonoids were shown to be the best markers for dis
tinguishing between authentic and adulterated drug samples, with several ad
vantages over triterpene analysis. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
