Ms. Al-mandeel et al., Re-appraisal of cica-care (silicone gel sheet) in the treatment of hypertrophic and keloid scars, SAUDI MED J, 19(6), 1998, pp. 741-745
Objectives: In this study we examined the efficacy of Cica-Care gel (Silico
ne gel sheet) in keloid and hypertrophic scars.
Methods: Thirty patients each with either a single keloid (N=3) or a hypert
rophic scar (N=27) and a mean scar duration of 30 months were studied, Ther
e were 14 males and 16 females with a mean age of 26 years. Only 23 patient
s completed the treatment. Topical application of Cica-Care gel large enoug
h to cover the scar, without pressure for a period of 9-12 months.
Results: The results amongst 23 patients based on improvement was graded as
good in 18 (78.3%), fair in 3 (13.0%) and poor in 2 (8.7%) patients. Two o
ut of 3 keloid scar patients showed poor results.
Conclusion: Cica-vare gel treatment is easy to use, pain free, comfortable,
well tolerated in hot climatic conditions, cost-effective, and has shown t
o be beneficial in the treatment of hypertrophic scars, but its efficacy in
keloid scars needs further study.
