T. Orth et al., Analysis of epitope spreading over an eleven-year period in a patient withsystemic lupus erythematosus, SC J RHEUM, 27(6), 1998, pp. 461-464
During a period of more than eleven years serum samples of a patient with S
ystemic Lupus Erythematosus were collected and analyzed for anti-nuclear au
toantibodies. High titer of anti-La/SS - B were detectable in all serum sam
ples. The La/SS - B epitopes remained constant. Besides anti-La/SS - B anti
bodies all serum samples contained traces of anti-Ro/SS - A including anti-
Ro52 and anti-Ro60 antibodies. During disease hares anti-Ro/SS - A antibodi
es were upregulated and anti-dsDNA antibodies appeared, thus supporting the
concept of an antigen driven intermolecular epitope spreading to Ro/SS-A a
nd dsDNA.
