Abstract
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) celebrates i ts 150th anniversary in 1998. The American Psychological Association and th e AAAS have been linked institutionally since the early part of this centur y, and 3 psychologists in particular have been prominent figures in the AAA S at critical times in its history. James McKeen Cattell revived the journa l Science, orchestrated its link to the AAAS, and helped strengthen the AAA S's ties to its affiliated organizations; Dael Wolfle was instrumental in t ransforming the AAAS into a professional organization with a variety of pub lic programs; and William Bevan helped the AAAS to weather the turbulent ye ars of the early 1970s, stressing the importance of scientists' responsibil ity to society.
