Abstract
Thrombopoietin (TPO) concentrations were determined in umbilical cord plasm a of 121 healthy term newborns, The lower detection limit of the enzyme imm unoassay employed was 32.5 pg/ml. Median cord plasma TPO concentration was 78 (interquartile range 55-107) pg/ml, 95th percentile was 255 pg/ml, In on ly 8% (10/121), TPO was below the detection limit compared to 81% of health y adults (25/31). In cord blood and adult controls, there were no significa nt correlations of TPO with platelet count or mass.
