2-Hydroxy-4-methacryloxyacetophenone-semicarbazone (HMAPS) was prepared and
characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopic techniques. Poly(2-hydroxy-4-met
hacryloxyacetophenone) (poly(HMAP)) was synthesized in 2-butanone solution
using benzoyl peroxide as initiator at 65 degrees C. Poly(2-hydroxy-4-metha
cryloxyacetophenone-semicarbazone) (HMAPS) was prepared from poly(HMAP). Th
e polymers were also characterized by spectral techniques. The molecular we
ights of the polymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography. The
polymer metal chelates of Cu(II) and Ni(II) of poly(HMAPS) were synthesize
d. The polychelates were characterized by IR and elemental analysis. The di
ffuse reflectance spectra and magnetic moments of the polychelates are show
n to be distorted octahedral for both poly(HMAPS)-Ni(II) and poly(HMAPS)-Cu
(II) complexes respectively. The thermal properties of the polymer and meta
