Free radical damage is an important factor in many pathological and toxicol
ogical processes. Despite extensive research efforts in biomarkers in recen
t years, yielding promising results in experimental animals, there is still
a great need for additional research on the applicability of, especially n
on-invasive, biomarkers of free radical damage in humans. This review gives
an overview of the applications in experimental and human situations of fo
ur main groups of products resulting from free radical damage, these includ
e: lipid peroxidation products, isoprostanes, DNA-hydroxylation products an
d protein hydroxylation products. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Inc.
