Abstract
The current role of antibiotics in elective and emergency hand surgery is c ontroversial. The historical and current literature on the use of antibioti cs in this setting is reviewed with an emphasis on well-designed clinical t rials evaluating their efficacy. Guidelines for antibiotic use based on the existing literature are presented. Finally, the potential hazards of antib iotic use and areas requiring further study are addressed.
