The synthesis of catecholamines by immunocompetent cells has now been demon
strated. In addition, catecholamines have been discovered inside the nuclea
r membrane and may therefore interact in the transcription process. Here, J
onas Bergquist and colleagues describe the powerful impact that catecholami
nes exert on the immune system by downregulation of proliferation and diffe
rentiation, and induction of apoptosis.
