The square-planar iridium(I) thiolato complex [Ir(NO) (SMes)(2)(PPh3)] (1;
Mes = Cd6H2Me3-2,4,6), which has been prepared by the reaction of [Ir(NO)Cl
-2(PPh3)(2)] with NaSMes, reacted propylene with sulfide to afford the squa
re-pyramidal 1-arylthio-2-propanethiolato iridium(III) complex [Ir(NO)(SMes
)(SCHMeCH(2)SMes) (PPh3)] (2). Similar treatment of the ruthenium(IV) [Ru(N
CMe)(SDur)(4)] (3; Dur=C6HMe4-2,3,5,6) resulted in the formation of the 1-a
ryltbio-3-propanethiolato complex [Ru(SDur)(3)(SCHMeCH(2)SDur)] ( 4) contai
ning a trigonal-bipyramidal ruthenium(IV) center. The detailed structures o
f 2 and 4 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. (C) 1998 Elsevier
