Agroforestry is among the practices that can address the problems caused by
unsustainable agriculture in Latin America. In eastern Paraguay, some smal
l-scale subsistence farmers have already been motivated to adopt agroforest
ry; they expect their trees to produce fuelwoad and forage while improving
the soil in their crop fields and home gardens. For many others, however, s
kepticism and lack of resources remain barriers to adopting alternative lan
d-use strategies-and pose a challenge to local, national, and international
organizations.
